National Youth Violence Prevention Week 2025

Young people deserve to feel safe and supported wherever they are. This extends beyond a sense of security to include having opportunities to express their authentic selves and feel valued when they share their experiences and insights. Their superpower is bringing fresh perspectives and sense of idealism that emboldens us all to create a future free from violence.

To celebrate community and amplify youth voices, the Violence Prevention Institute's Center for Youth Equity at Tulane University is honoring National Youth Violence Prevention Week with three engaging, enlightening, and entertaining events that speak to the unique potential of kids and teens and how we can support them.

Our NYVPW events are free and open to the public. We hope connecting in community inspires action toward a society where all young people have the opportunity and support to thrive.

Art as Voice: Artist Panel Discussion around “I Gotta Tell You Something About Me” Youth Art Exhibit

Join us for an inspiring panel discussion featuring youth and professional artists as they explore the powerful role creativity plays in personal well-being and community connection. Panelists will share how their artistic practice serves as an outlet for self-expression, a tool for navigating challenges, and a means of fostering dialogue on important social issues. Through storytelling, personal experiences, and audience interaction, this conversation will highlight the value of art in building resilience, strengthening communities, and amplifying voices that need to be heard. Whether you're an artist, an advocate, or simply curious about the intersection of art and well-being, this discussion will offer fresh perspectives and meaningful insights.

While this event is part of National Youth Violence Prevention Week, attendees will also be able to view a curated exhibit including artwork from three years of CYE’s Youth Art Contest + Exhibit. “I Gotta Tell You Something About Me” centers youth experiences in our society, how they define themselves, what gives them strength, and what they need to thrive.

This New Orleans: Stories of Truth & Hope Film Screening, Panel Discussion, & Gun Lock Giveaway

As our last event in National Youth Violence Prevention Week, we’re raising awareness around youth violence and gun violence. On the same evening, you can see a screening of This is New Orleans and receive a gun lock for firearm safety. This powerful, youth-made documentary takes an honest look at the root causes of violence in New Orleans and the urgent need for more resources to support young people. Created by local youth, this film sheds light on the challenges they face, the systemic factors contributing to violence, and their vision for a safer, more supportive community.

Following the screening, a panel of young filmmakers will discuss the documentary’s key themes, share personal insights, and explore actionable solutions. Attendees will also be able to take home free gun locks and receive training on firearm safety. Don’t miss this important conversation about the future of our city and how we can all play a role in creating change.
