Epi-Aid 2024 Report on 2023 Homicide Increases in Orleans Parish

In September 2023, the Louisiana Department of Health enlisted the CDC epidemiological assistance team to conduct an investigation of the rise in firearm-related homicides in Orleans Parish. Over 14 days in October, the team analyzed data, conducted interviews, and assessed violence prevention initiatives. Findings revealed disproportionately high rates of firearm homicides among Black non-Hispanic men, geographic and demographic disparities, and unique local trends compared to national patterns. Data-sharing limitations and sustainability challenges hinder current prevention efforts, though initiatives like justice system modernization and youth-focused programs show promise. Recommendations included improving data systems, fostering collaboration, tailoring local interventions, and expanding programming to address violence risk and protective factors. Enhanced data-sharing practices and expanded community engagement were identified as critical to reducing violence in Orleans Parish.
