Focus Area
Adverse Childhood Experiences
Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, encompass trauma experienced during childhood, such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction. These experiences can have long-term impacts on mental, physical, and social health, increasing the risk of chronic disease, behavioral challenges, and future exposure to violence. Research in this area helps identify both risk and protective factors, guiding interventions that strengthen family supports, promote resilience, and foster safe, nurturing environments for children. VPI-affiliated faculty and projects within this focus area examine strategies to prevent childhood trauma and mitigate its lifelong effects, translating findings into practical programs and policy recommendations.
